Paver Patterns Explained: Herringbone, Basketweave & More

The pattern you choose changes the entire feel of a paver project — and some patterns are stronger than others. Here's a quick tour.

Herringbone

Pavers laid at 45° or 90° in an interlocking zig-zag. It's the strongest pattern for distributing loads, which makes it the top pick for driveways. It also looks classic and intricate.

Running bond

The simplest, most versatile pattern — rows offset like brickwork. Clean, modern and economical, great for walkways and patios.

Basketweave

Pairs of pavers alternate horizontal and vertical for a traditional, woven look. Beautiful on patios and garden paths with a heritage feel.

Random ashlar

Mixes several paver sizes for a natural, non-repeating layout — popular with large-format and flagstone-look pavers for an upscale, organic patio.
